Close all doors and windows around the space you want to cool or heat, so hot or cold air can't sneak in. Blinds and curtains block a lot of unwanted heat in air-conditioned rooms.

Make sure ducted air-con is zoned correctly, so you can switch off the zones you're not using. Service your unit every 12 months or as recommended. Use timers to regulate the AC, even in your absence.

Use Economy or Energy Saver mode - once the desired temperature is reached the unit shuts off. And when an old unit finally gives up, replace it with an energy-efficient system: modern ones use far less electricity.
